Hybrid Jaguars leaping out in two years time, XJ is first

Image
Jaguar plans to introduce hybrid variants of the XJ, XF and the XK, expected to hit the market by 2013-2014. This comes after sister company Land Rover announced similar plans starting with the hybrid Range Rover Sport in 2013. Apparently, the XJ limo will be the first cat to house the new hybrid system as big cars reap more hybrid benefits and can more easily swallow the premium, which is said to be about £10,000. About 100 engineers in the 18-month old hybrid powertrain division of Tata owned Jaguar-Land Rover (JLR) are working on the first prototype of the drivetrain, which consists of a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel working in tandem with a 35kW electric motor and a new ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. The transmission can be fitted to any JLR model with a north-south (longitudinal) layout. The first JLR hybrids will be diesel-electric, but petrols (which are less complicated to engineer) will follow. JLR is also researching Chevy Volt style range-extending hyb

Aston Martin One-77 – ten units sold to one customer!

Ultimate luxury and class comes with a price tag. A price tag of 1.2 million pounds to be exact. The item it’s attached to is none other than the gorgeous Aston Martin One-77. But for some, money is no object for desires of the heart, which certainly applies to one customer who purchased 10 of these beauties. Word is that the £12 million customer in question is of Middle Eastern descent. It should be the biggest purchase from a single customer Gaydon has ever received. The 10 units also represent 13% of the One-77’s total production run of 77 cars. Each the cars were customised with different interiors. The One-77 has plenty of lucky sevens surrounding it – a 7.3-litre engine with 700 bhp and a limited run of 77 units. The most extreme Aston’s top speed is…no not 700, but an impressive 354 km/h. Acceleration to 96 km/h (60 mph) is achieved in 3.5 seconds. With this latest supermarket sweep, 65 of the 77 cars are already spoken for. So what are you waiting for? To help y

yenne gets 200 bhp boost and 911 eyes from Russians

Image
Old or new, we’ve never been big fans of the Cayenne’s looks. Now, look what Topcar has done to the second-gen yet to be launched Cayenne. The Russian tuning firm has developed three different styling packages for the super SUV. Each model gets a 200 horsepower boost from 550 to 750 bhp and will sit on forged wheels. Other standard offerings include new side mirrors and added LED lighting. The first of the three packages is the Cayenne Advantage 2, which has Porsche 911 headlights and includes front and rear spoiler bumpers, extended fenders, side skirts, wide door caps and a new bonnet. Only 25 of these cars will be specially built. What do you think of those classic oval headlamps on the Cayenne? Another limited edition package would be the Vantage GTR 2 which retains the original headlights but comes with wider intakes as part of a new front bumper, front and rear fender extenders, a bonnet and side skirts which gives is said to give the “bird of prey” look. Finally,

Ferrari website speaks a new language: Chinese

Image
All who peddle premium goods are tripping over themselves in luring new Chinese money, from Louis Vuitton to Ferrari. While LV opened two stores in Shanghai in a day last week, Maranello announced that its official ferrari.com website now speaks Chinese. It was in conjunction with the World Expo opening in Shanghai. Mandarin is only the fourth language available on the site, after Italian, English and Japanese. This opens up live news updates from Maranello, “Prancing Horse emotions”, activities and products to Chinese readers. They’ll discover interactive areas, car information, F1 news and the Ferrari Store. There’s also a virtual tour of the famous company via video clips and images. This is further proof of the importance of China to Ferrari, coming straight after the world premiere of the 599 GTO at the Beijing Auto Show . The Prancing Horse brand will also show its Hybrid concept, the Hy-Kers , at the Expo. Ferrari sold its first car in China in 1993 but only

Connect your Blackberry to BMW iDrive – coming soon!

I knew this was definitely coming sooner or later – you will soon be able to read your Blackberry push emails on your BMW’s iDrive. This has nothing to do with Blackberry maker RIM buying the QNX operating system that iDrive is based on. Instead, iDrive is accessing the emails on the Blackberry using the Bluetooth Message Access Profile feature. You can watch a quick video walkthrough of the system in the video above. iDrive can even read out the text of your email so you can still “listen” to your email while you are driving. So it looks like the next time Auto Bavaria has Celcom Blackberry promotions (they’ve had it before with the Blackberry Storm), it might just be pre-setup to work with your BMW’s iDrive!

More sketches of the Volkswagen Polo Sedan appear online

Image
These are supposed to be new sketches of the new Volkswagen Polo Sedan, which some people are beginning to refer as the Vento. It’s not the first time we’ve seen alleged sketches of the new subcompact sedan, but these look more complete compared to the last one we saw . Theophilus has even done an artist rendering of what a new Polo Sedan could look like . Volkswagen has a history of selling Polo versions of the sedan in a few parts of the world. Even the previous generation Polo had a sedan variant called the Polo Classic, but because of the previous Polo’s more bulbous rounded look , it didn’t really translate into a sedan shape very well. The new Polo has straighter lines and a sedan variant actually looks decent. It doesn’t look stunted because wheelbase and length of the Polo platform has said to be have been increased by about 50mm.
